USAGE:
Abscisic Acid is a plant hormone involved in many plant developmental processes, regulating ion balance and metabolism, and inhibiting plant germination and seedling growth.
Abscisic acid can stimulate ethylene production, promote fruit ripening, and inhibit the synthesis of DNA and proteins. The physiological functions of abscisic acid include the following:
1. Inhibiting and promoting growth. When applied externally at high concentrations, abscisic acid inhibits the growth of stems, hypocotyls, roots, coleoptiles, or leaves. However, at low concentrations, it promotes rooting of isolated cucumber cotyledons and elongation of hypocotyls, accelerates the reproduction of duckweed, and stimulates the development of parthenocarpic seeds.
2. Maintaining bud and seed dormancy. Dormancy is related to the balance between gibberellin and abscisic acid in the plant.
3. Promoting fruit and leaf abscission.
4. Promoting stomatal closure. Abscisic acid can rapidly close stomata without toxicity to plants, making it an excellent anti-transpiration agent. One biological test method for determining abscisic acid concentration involves floating the epidermis of isolated leaves on the surface of various concentrations of abscisic acid solution. Within a certain range, the degree of stomatal opening and closure is inversely proportional to the concentration of abscisic acid.
5. Affecting flowering. Under long-day conditions, abscisic acid can induce dormancy in the apical buds of strawberries and blackberries, promoting flowering. 6. Affecting sexual differentiation. Gibberellin can induce male flowers in female cannabis plants, an effect that can be reversed by abscisic acid, but abscisic acid cannot induce female flowers in male plants.
